Live Theatre Performance

Showdown at Waste World begins with a 25-minute quirky comedy from The National Theatre for Children. Performed by two professional actors, the play follows Mayor Matilda who is facing a big problem – the town’s recycling plant has stopped running! It seems that Robo-Ned Jelly, leader of the Jelly Gang has sabotaged the recycling technology and is determined to waste all the resources in town! Can Matilda, with help from Barry Reef and Gordon Gumnut, learn about recycling and waste to re-program Robo-Ned in time and save the town?

Educational Concepts

The live program and follow-up classroom materials center on four main teaching points. These four points jumpstart the program at large, leading from the live show and materials into the upcoming classroom and after-school driven portions of Showdown at Waste World.

  • What is waste in our environment
  • Why reducing waste is important
  • How science and technology help reduce, reuse, and recycle
  • What YOU can do

CURRICULUM

WeDo 2.0 facilitates and supports a clear, easy-to-follow journey through subjects including: life-, physical-, earth- and space sciences, and engineering. The curriculum allows for 17 projects totaling more than 40 hours of pre-prepared guided and open projects with step-by-step directions that enable lessons to meet all students’ needs – no matter their ability level.

Each project offers around three hours of engagement and is delivered in three phases: explore, create and share. The explore phase connects students to the real-world problem they will be asked to solve. In the create phase, students build, program and modify their designs. Lastly, in the share phase, students document and present their findings to their peers.
